A semiconductor is any material that promotes the flow of electricity. The advent of semiconductor technology in the 1970s gave rise to today's random access memory. The first company to create, manufacture and market an economical semiconductor core memory was Intel. The company began work in 1968 and introduced a 64-bit RAM chip in 1969. In the same year, Intel released a 256-bit chip, the first commercial use of a silicone-based semiconductor for computer memory.
